- Editorial Support for Independent Fiction Authors
Supporting independent authors on their journey to publication
Based in South Wales, UK, and qualified with The Publishing Training Centre, I specialise in supporting independent authors of fiction: traditional and self-publishing, literary and commercial. I offer a choice of editorial services, each tailored to meet the needs of manuscripts at different stages of the writing process. These services are proofreading, copy-editing and manuscript reviews (also known as critiques).
I value trust and transparency in the author-editor partnership, and work with you to help your manuscript reach its full potential. Whether you are seeking to publish traditionally, or self-publishing, I will ensure your manuscript is polished to a well-presented, professional standard.
My approach is friendly, efficient and reliable, but also dedicated and meticulous with an emphasis on support. Whichever service you opt for, my role is to help you improve your manuscript by providing a guiding hand for new authors or assistance for the more experienced.
I am a member of the Society for Editors and Proofreaders (SfEP) and abide by their Code of Practice. I am also a member of the Association of Independent Publishing Professionals (AIPP), an association dedicated to independent authors and those who provide services for them.
- How I work
My preferred method of working on your manuscript is with Microsoft Word's Track Changes facility. This method allows you to see what changes I have made and gives you the opportunity to either accept or reject these as you wish. However, I can also work with PDF files using annotations/comment boxes or electronic mark-up stamps, or I can work directly on paper.
More importantly, I aim to provide a method of working which is agreeable to us both.
My main method of communication will be via e-mail. When working on your novel, you will receive a weekly update which serves two purposes: one is to let you know how work on your novel is progressing, the other is to bring to your attention any urgent queries I may have on how to proceed in certain areas. Non-urgent queries or items for your attention will be listed separately and returned with your completed manuscript.
- Try before you buy
I understand how important your work is to you, which is why I insist on providing a free no-obligation 1,500-word sample edit/proofread before you make a final decision. I realise that being a 'good fit' for one another is essential for a successful outcome. From your point of view, I need to understand and respect your narrative and what it is hoping to achieve; from my point of view, I need to be absolutely sure I will be able to serve you and your manuscript in the best possible way. A sample edit/proofread allows us both to see if I'm the right professional for your novel.
To date, I have worked on Fantasy, Science Fiction (Steampunk), Contemporary, Literary, Children's, Romance, Comedy and Mystery, in the form of novels, novellas, short stories, book series and anthologies, for Children, Young Adult and Adult audiences. However, all genres will be considered. Feedback from clients is available on my website.
Fees for my editorial services are tailored according to the amount and type of work your manuscript requires. They are, however, calculated on a per-1,000-word basis, so you can rest assured that the price you are quoted will be the price you are charged upon completion (providing no additional work is requested after the project has started).
For manuscripts in excess of 50,000 words, a 30% deposit is required before work commences. This deposit secures my sole occupation with your manuscript for the time alotted to complete the project, as well as providing insurance for myself. The remainder will be invoiced upon completion.
Accepted forms of payment are PayPal, electronic bank transfer, or cheque (subject to clearance).
*** All new clients receive 20% off editorial services for the first project ***
*** During 2017, 5% of all payments made to Tina Williams Editorial Support will be donated to Unicef UK ***
For material that is edited and almost good to go. A proofread is the final check of your fully edited novel from start to finish prior to publication. It weeds out any remaining errors in spelling, punctuation, grammar, layout and style, and checks for consistency throughout. This final stage of the writing process ensures your book is well-presented and professional. I can also format your manuscript in preparation for a smooth transition to e-book publication.
For work that has been self-edited but requires some further attention. In addition to checking spelling, punctuation and grammar, layout and style, a copy-edit will examine the narrative for continuity, clarity and flow. Inconsistencies and areas of concern or confusion are flagged, reworded or restructured accordingly, whilst retaining your narrative voice as a matter of priority.
- Manuscript Review
For manuscripts at any stage of the writing process. A review provides detailed feedback on all areas of your narrative, from point of view to characterisation, setting, plot and dramatic arc. Presented in a respectful, helpful and supportive manner, the review will highlight your narrative's strengths and weaknesses, and discuss potential areas and ideas for improvement.
