About Maricel Williams

I am an experienced freelance science editor with a PhD in Earth and Environmental Sciences from the University of Bristol. My role is to support ESL (English as a Second Language) clients toward publishing their scientific work. I ensure manuscripts are submission-ready in terms of language, grammar, clarity, scientific accuracy, and readability. I go the extra mile toward restructuring sentences to communicate the science as concisely and formally as possible—even if the sentences are grammatically correct. I also format the manuscripts to ensure they meet the scope of the target journal and correct or highlight areas of ambiguity, odd structuring, and unconventional words/phrases. To date, I have edited ~100 manuscripts from ESL academics across the world, including the Far East, Latin America, the Middle East, and Europe. As a previous academic myself, I understand what publishers are looking for and will do my best to help overseas clients perfect their writing for journal submission and peer review.

I focus my freelance work on manuscripts that incorporate laboratory and/or field-based techniques rather than numerical modelling.

– Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry for element analysis (e.g., U and Th in sediments and Mg and Ca in calcite microfossils)
– Scanning electron microscopy for microfossil morphometric analysis (coccolithophores)
– Light- and stereomicroscopy for microplankton species assemblages (foraminifera and diatoms)
– Sediment grain-size analysis (Coulter Counter/Mastersizer)
– Sediment-core sampling and processing (e.g., sieving/carbonate and silica removal/core XRF scanning)
– Sediment radiocarbon dating
– Ocean research experience (palaeoceanography work) onboard the RRS James Cook in the equatorial Atlantic (sediment-core processing/ROV work/CTD work)
