Fiction and creative non-fiction editing for independent writers.
As a trained copy editor and proofreader, my aim is to rid your manuscript of errors while making it more readable, giving your writing a professional edge. I’ll make sure your sentences flow smoothly, free from any distracting inaccuracies and inconsistencies, awkward syntax or repetition. I’ll also check that the nuts and bolts of punctuation, spelling and grammar are correct, so you can publish and share with confidence.
Skills and services
I offer a combination of line and copy-editing which focuses on improving and correcting your writing at word and sentence level. If your work has already been edited, proofreading is the final check and polish before publication. And if you’re looking for developmental help, I also offer a manuscript critique service which provides detailed and honest feedback on your novel as a whole.
Whether you’ve written a novel or novella, short story, journal, magazine feature or website, I can offer you a flexible solution based on your individual requirements, priorities and budget.
And if English is your second language, no problem, I have a lot of experience helping non-native English speakers achieve fluency in their writing.
I’m happy working in most genres and subject areas but my areas of particular interest and expertise are:
• contemporary/modern/upmarket fiction
• thrillers: psychological, noir, espionage, adventure, political and other sub-genres
• mystery and suspense
• travel writing
• expat/new life abroad
• food and drink
Qualifications and training
• BA (Hons) degree in Publishing and English Literature (2:1) | Oxford Brookes University, UK
• TEFL/TESOL certificates (teaching English as a foreign/other language) | i-to-i, UK
• Diploma in Proofreading and Editing (distinction) | College of Media and Publishing, UK
• Editing with Word | Society for Editors and Proofreaders (SfEP), UK
• Copyediting Fiction | Editorial Freelancers Association (EFA), US

I’m working at Buy a Home Mallorca, and we needed help with proofreading a magazine for print. We were just a few days away from deadline when I realized we needed to find a proofreader. Even though Nicky just had one day to finish, she delivered right on time and was always quick to reply when I had questions. She was also very thorough and created a style sheet that we can use for the next issue. We will for sure hire Nicky for the next issue of the magazine. Thank you, Nicky!
Nicky proofread my note for my magazine. She made some very useful suggestions I wouldn’t have thought of and was very helpful. She is a pleasure to work with, easy to communicate with and very reliable –my text was sent back to me on time without any delay. She was also happy to answer my questions after I got the text back and explained everything to me. I would definitely not hesitate to use her services again and I do recommend her to anyone.
Nicky has done several academic pieces of work for me, all promptly returned to a high standard.
Very pleased with the service supplied. Consistent, high quality work provided in a timely manner. Safe to say that I would not be published without your input. Thanks Nicky.
Thank you very much for your prompt and speedy check of the Animal Charity appeal. It is up and running, and contributions are coming in!
Thanks again Nicky, and best wishes for the future.
