Specialising in technical non-fiction editing, particularly science, engineering and the environment.
Look no further if you want your written material polishing to a professional standard. To help get your message across effectively I will check for spelling, grammar and punctuation errors, and ensure that the writing style and formatting are consistent. However, the requirements for each project can vary widely and therefore I will tailor my service to your specific needs. Writing technical material can sometimes be a difficult balancing act of sounding professional while also using an engaging tone and not losing sight of the author’s voice: this is where I can help you.
A proofreading service can be provided for any form of written material including:
– academic text
– corporate material
– press releases
– web content
– articles and features.
The service can be tailored according to a client’s brief but will generally include:
– identifying corrections to spelling, grammar and punctuation
– ensuring consistency throughout (e.g. style, capitalisation, hyphenation)
– correcting any formatting, spacing or layout issues
– checking page numbers, captions, headings, references, web links, and the table of contents
– comparing the proofs to the edited copy or reading ‘blind’.
Proofreading can be performed on screen or on paper. Changes can be marked up using BS 5261C:2005 symbols, Microsoft Word Track Changes, Adobe Acrobat, or any other method that is required.
I offer a service for most subjects, although I specialise in science and engineering and can provide particular expertise in environmental matters (e.g. environmental engineering, sustainability, energy, air and water pollution, conservation, environmental policy and management, and climate change). However, proofreading skills are transferable to any subject matter; prior knowledge of a subject often helps but isn’t always essential.
Qualifications and experience
I am a Chartered Environmentalist and member of the Society for Editors and Proofreaders (SfEP) and the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA). Qualifications include MSc Environmental Engineering (Distinction) and BSc (Hons) Geography. In more recent years I have completed proofreading training by the SfEP and also the Publishing Training Centre (Merit).
Prior to proofreading I held environmental roles within the environmental regulation, rail, and oil and gas sectors. Finally, I also have experience in the IT industry as a mainframe analyst programmer within the financial services sector.

James helped me with proofreading several assignments while I was studying at university. I am fluent in English but it is my second language and therefore I asked him to check my text for incorrect grammar, sentence structure and overall English coherence of the content. He provided a very helpful service to a high standard and always delivered on time.
