I am a freelance copyeditor and proofreader based in Oxford, UK, with over a decade of experience in the publishing industry.

I have held a variety of positions at different publishing houses, including working closely with commissioning editors and academic authors for many books and journal articles in the field of engineering, being a development editor for a high-profile list of marketing and business titles, and assisting with asset management for English Language Teaching materials.

In 2017, I co-established a small academic publishing start-up with the goal of opening up the English language market to scholars with limited skills in writing in English. During this time, I substantively edited translated manuscripts to publishable standards, in addition to learning the general nuts and bolts of running a business and the ‘complete picture’ of the publishing process. Our most successful publication was a non-profit book which raised over 10,000 EUR for the Dar Merħba Bik foundation, a Maltese charity devoted to helping victims of domestic abuse.

All this my past experience has informed my current work as a freelance editor. While my specialty has been working with academic books and journals, I have also edited UN reports, research proposals, dissertations, general non-fiction, prose collections, magazine articles, and exhibition materials.

As well as a lifelong passion for the written word, I have a reputation for being somewhat ‘tech savvy’, and having a general interest in resolving computer issues, learning new software, customising processes and coding, has served me well in my career as an editor.

I believe that learning is a continuous process even for established professionals and have trained with courses administered by the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading (CIEP) and the Publishing Training Centre (PTC). My formal qualifications are a Master’s Degree in Historical Studies from the University of Oxford (2018) and a Bachelor’s Degree in English from the University of Southampton (2013).

I am an intermediate member of the CIEP, and I abide by their Membership Codes.

Many would argue that as technology advances at such a rapid pace, jobs like proofreading and editing will soon be taken over by other tools. Perhaps it is because, in the age of AI, we need more of that ‘human touch’ from those who are valued for their craft. I believe Nick Mould is someone who truly understands the value of craftsmanship.

Nick’s work was very thorough, but he didn’t deluge me with suggestions: a nice balance.

He didn’t miss anything – but didn’t overwhelm me.

Nick also rationalised my 1600 citations very professionally, & turned all of them into live links: what I’d taken to be an impossible task.

He was also very pleasant to deal with – so the experience was stress-free.

We were fortunate to find Nick at the beginning of our publishing experience with our indie press, Orkneyology Press. As micro-publishers, it’s important to us to have talented freelance professionals to call upon for help in areas where we’re lacking. Nick’s professionalism and his high degree of expertise is making our own learning process more comfortable.

We’ve worked with Nick numerous times now on some pretty tricky manuscripts and have been completely satisfied every time. He is timely, presents detailed edits and explains fully what changes he suggests and why. We will definitely be calling on Nick again soon, and we do recommend him and his work without hesitation.

Nick was a pleasure to work with. He turned around a proof check of my 30k word how-to book GHOSTWRITING NOVELS promptly and accurately.
