A highly trained freelance proofreader, I come armed with a complementary professional and vocational background.

A teacher of English as a Foreign Language for many years, inculcating and clarifying the weave of grammar and syntax that underpins language, I’m out of the classroom now and in the challenging but more focussed business of proofreading.

I’m also a long-term practitioner of fiction writing, benefitting from a number of consultations with The Literacy Consultancy in London, and acquiring down the years a keenly developed sense of idiom and expression.

My training as a proofreader was with The Society for Editors and Proofreaders culminating in their intensive/extensive mentoring program, acquiring an in-depth grasp of precision punctuation and the protocols of textual formatting along the way. I subsequently undertook Copy Editing training with the SfEP to enable myself to deal with issues peripheral to pure proofreading.

Domiciled in Valencia, Spain, with fluent Spanish, I’m able to carry out translation of non-technical/scientific/medical texts from Spanish into English, and can also transform text written in English by non-native speakers into flowing, finely tuned native English.

I’m happy to work for publishers, self-publishing authors, academics and the business sector, proofreading books, magazines, manuscripts, articles, reports, guides, websites, theses and dissertations.

My areas of particular interest and expertise are:

~ fiction (both a writer and a voracious reader)
~ EFL and ESL teaching (ex-teacher)
~ travel books and guides (an inveterate traveller)
~ the wine trade (wine salesman in Australia for several years)
~ cycling (my preferred approach to keeping fit)
~ history, philosophy, anthropology (when not reading fiction).

I proofread onscreen using Microsoft Word Track Changes, and can also work with PDFs.

Nick has helped me proofread my English as a foreign language textbook (I am a linguist but English isn’t my native language). It was an unusual task given that the textbook is written in the form of a detective story and aimed at the beginners. So Nick had to balance and make judgement as to what would sound and look English, yet was easy enough for level A1 students. He’s done the job perfectly well and in a very short period of time, his comments and suggestions were very helpful. I’m looking forward to working with Nick in the future!

Nicholas has done an amazing job proof-editing a series of articles for our independent wine magazine.

Publishing in english, which isn’t always our writer’s mother tongue, holds a few challenges but Nicholas has been great help.

His corrections and editing were very precise and easy to understand. He adapted quickly to our process and workflow which made it easy for us to work with him even under time pressure.

His work integrated perfectly into our publication’s tonality, so that the final versions of the articles still read and felt like our own articles. Great job Nicholas, we’re counting on you for the next issue!

I used Nick Fisher to proofread a research document prepared for an advertising pitch. The research itself was compiled from published reports, online research, focus groups and depth interviews. It covered market trends and dynamics as well as consumer insights. I was looking for fast and thorough turnaround. Nick did a great job in super quick time, he made well thought through helpful suggestions demonstrating flair as well as exhibiting excellent attention to detail.

Well, I’m impressed! I have written technical documents for many years and thought that my English was proficient. But this was an educational assignment that I had to submit and I needed it to be spot on. I’m glad I got it proof read! Nicholas spotted many mistakes. Punctuation errors were corrected, as were some missed words and hard to spot things like double spaces and incorrect capital letters. He also offered some good suggestions for words that better described what I was trying to convey. I will definitely use Nicholas again on my next assignment.

We required a professional proofreader to check content, some of it scientific, for our new website. Nicholas Fisher responded promptly to our request and turned the work around quicker than anticipated. We were impressed with the work and will definitely use his services again for the proofreading of reports, academic papers and additional content for our research centre’s website.

I use Nick Fisher, Gimlet Eyes, to proofread my copy for grammar, punctuation and sense, and he comes back very quickly with perfect copy.
Good sales copy is important for my business, as I need to upload text to the international website we use to advertise our overseas properties for rent. No renters means no money! So effective and succinct sales copy is vital – and that kind of proofreading is not a job for an amateur.
Nick also excels in adding atmosphere to the descriptions: a very useful skill that comes from his wide experience in working in many different areas.
I thoroughly recommend Nick for excellent and good value proofreading in any kind of area.

Nicholas Fisher did a sterling job proofreading the first three chapters of my novel in preparation for an Australian literary prize. I gave him what I thought was a fairly pristine piece of writing and was amazed at how many errors he weeded out. He delivered these changes in less than 48 hours, giving me extra time to prepare my application. I am now completely confident to send my entry and am deeply indebted to Nick for his input.
